Pre-Qualifying Draw Final Results in PDF Format
Illinois State men's tennis player Filip Miljevic was able to advance to the qualifying rounds of the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships on Sunday. Miljevic won three matches in pre-qualifying play to secure one of sixteen bids into the qualifying draw, which begins Monday.
"Filip has been getting the job done," Head coach Cris James said. "I think he has always had this potential in him and now his experience is starting to show. He is the type of player who is good at managing the match; he doesn't let things escalate. If he has a bad moment he'll come right back with something good. That shows the kind of winner he is."
Sunday morning's play began with Miljevic defeating Scott Hohenstein of UC Santa Barbara in the third round, 6-0, 6-3. Miljevic went on to beat Southern Methodist's Bryan Griffin, 7-5, 4-6, 11-9, to secure the qualifying draw berth. The other Redbird competing on Sunday was Matej Zlatkovic, who won his first match against Zac Tsai of UC Irvine, 6-3, 6-2. Zlatkovic then faced off against Marcel Thiemann of Ole Miss in the fourth round and lost, 6-1, 7-5.
"Matej was competitive today and lost to a player who is really tough," James said. "He had a lot of good chances to win the match and I think he'll learn a lot from the loss."
Miljevic and Zlatkovic will also team up in qualifying-round doubles play, which begins Tuesday. The two have not played together on the doubles court this season but head coach James is hopeful.
"Fast starts are important on the doubles court," James said. "We'll see if we can put something together to give ourselves a good chance on Tuesday."
Miljevic will enter qualifying-round play Monday with an overall tournament record of 9-1, with several of those wins coming against tough competition. His match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am.
