NOTRE DAME, Ind. -

Illinois State swimming and diving finished in third-place with 141 points at the Notre Dame Relays in South Bend, Ind., Friday evening. Impressive individual performances lead the Redbirds to finish in front of Valparaiso (91) and Cleveland State (78), and followed close behind Notre Dame (186).

The `Birds had a strong start to the meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay as junior Amy Schaefer, sophomore Jessica McGee and freshmen Jeanette Nolte and Sarah Rendek finished in third-place with a time of 1:39.22. ISU placed in the top-three in five out of the 12 all-female events.

Head coach Steve Paska was satisfied with the start to the meet.

"This was our first big meet of the year," Paska said. "Notre Dame and Michigan are both quality programs and I think that we started the meet out in fine fashion with our performance in the first relay."

Diving coach Phil Hoffmann was impressed with freshman Maureen Doyle's performance at Notre Dame.

"It was a great first meet for Maureen," Hoffmann said. "For it being Maureen's first collegiate-level meet of her career while competing against two big-name opponents, I'm very happy with how she performed tonight."

The solid start to the meet streamlined ISU into the third-place spot where the team was able to maintain their position in front of VU and CSU.

The Redbirds will continue competition in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Oct. 16, at 4:30 p.m., in a dual-meet against Northern Iowa.
