Leggett Named Valley Offensive Player of the Week

Nov. 16, 2009

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Illinois State junior outside hitter Mallory Leggett was named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. Leggett led the Redbirds to a four-set win over Indiana State last weekend. She is the first Redbird to earn the MVC Player of the Week award this year.

Leggett had team-highs of 18 kills and 20 digs, recording her 19th double-digit kill match and 13 double-double of the season. Earlier this season, she became the fifth player in school history to amass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career, and just the second player to achieve the feat as a junior.

Leggett leads the Redbirds in kills (346), kills per set (3.47), service aces (42) and is second in digs (281). She has led the Redbirds in kills in 20 of their 27 matches this season.

Creighton's Jessica Houts and Megan Bober were named the Valley Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, this week. GoRedbirds.com: Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
