Junior Katie Culbertson led Illinois State with eight kills and senior Kasey Mollerus had 12 digs, but the Redbirds were no match for Wichita State as the Shockers came into Redbird Arena and swept the `Birds 3-0 (26-24,25-20,25-18) Friday night.
Sophomore Tabitha Visk had seven kills, senior Jessica Pratapas led the team with 20 assists. Junior Mallory Leggett added five kills and seven digs.
The Redbirds (12-16, 7-10) used a 5-0 run early in the set to take a 9-3 lead. Both teams battled from there as ISU held an 18-12 advantage. But a 10-3 run by the Shockers (22-5, 13-4) put them in a 22-21 lead. With the score tied a 24, WSU scored two points to take the set 26-24. Visk led the `Birds with four kills while Mollerus added seven digs.
Up 13-12 in the second set, the Shockers used a 5-1 run to push their lead to 18-13. The Redbirds came back to within three points at 21-18, but WSU was able to close out the set 25-20. Junior Hailey Kelley and Pratapas each recorded three kills apiece. Mollerus added another four digs to her total.
With the score tied at seven, WSU used a 12-5 run to take a 19-12 advantage. The `Birds fought back but it was not enough as the Shockers closed out the set and match with a 25-18 victory.
Illinois State closes out the regular season Saturday against Missouri State at 7:05 p.m.
