NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior guard Maggie Krick led all scorers with 23 points and was one four players to score in double figures as the Redbirds routed Kentucky Wesleyan, 100-51, in exhibition play on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Tuesday night.
Krick converted 9-of-15 shot attempts and nearly notched a triple-double with nine assists and eight rebounds. Ashleen Bracey (21), Nicolle Lewis (17) and Hannah Spanich (14) joined Krick in double digits as the Redbirds outshot the Panthers 57.4 percent-to-27.9 percent. Lewis grabbed a game-high 11 boards to finish with a double-double, part of a 49-to-28 edge on the glass for Illinois State.
Illinois State scored 15 of the game's first 20 points, including the first six, and never trailed. The Redbirds used pressure defense to create turnovers and pushed the ball down the court in transition en route to an 11-0 advantage in fast break points at the break. Krick had 13 points at the half, and Lewis and Bracey both had 10.
The Redbirds came out of the half with the same intensity and scored the first 10 points before Kentucky Wesleyan's Lauren Goffinet ended the run with a jumper. Illinois State pushed its lead to as much as 52 in the second half and finished the game with a 56-14 edge on points in the paint. The crowd at Redbird Arena erupted as freshman guard Brooke Owens sunk a three-pointer with ten seconds remaining to push Illinois State to the century mark.
Amanda Harnist led the Panthers in scoring with 11 and Katie Behrens led KWC with five rebounds.
The Redbirds continue exhibition play Tuesday, Nov. 10, when they host Truman State at Redbird Arena for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff. Illinois State begins its regular-season slate against UCLA in the KCRG/TV9 Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City, Iowa, Nov. 14.
