ST. LOUIS -
Illinois State senior Scott Krapf, juniors Sarah Glowacki and Kirsten Lang, along with sophomore Aisha Praught were named to the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Scholar-Athlete teams as announced by the conference office Monday. The Redbirds earned the award after the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Cross Country Championships last weekend in Peoria, Ill.
"I am really proud of the men and the women that made the scholar-athlete team," said head coach Jeff Bovee. "It shows a lot about their dedication to their two main priorities at Illinois State, which are academics and athletics. Distance runners have to be dedicated to their sport, as all student-athletes do. I think the discipline carries over from the classroom and the playing field."
Krapf won the men's 8K race at the conference championships after covering the course in 25:47 and earning All-MVC honors for finishing in the top-10. He was the only men's runner to cross the finish line before the 26-minute mark. Krapf graduated in May with a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 4.0 in recreation and park administration. He is currently working on a master's degree in sport management at Illinois State.
Glowacki finished the 5K race in a time of 19:13, which put her in eighth place, while Lang was a second behind in 10th place. Both earned All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades for the first time in their careers. Glowacki holds a 3.42 GPA in exercise science, while Lang has a 3.60 GPA in middle level teacher education.
Praught covered the course in 19:41 and finished in 18th place and maintains a 3.48 GPA in geology
MVC Scholar-Athlete honors require student-athletes to meet performance standards, as the top-10 finishers at the conference championship earn all-conference honors and are included on the scholar-athlete team, provided they meet the set criteria. Other athletes must finish among the first 20 runners at the conference championships and hold a cumulative 3.0 GPA and be a sophomore in athletic and
academic standing to earn a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.
The ISU men's and women's cross country teams will compete Nov. 14 at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo.
