AKRON, Ohio - In the final day of competition at the Zippy Invitational in Akron, Ohio, the Illinois State swimming and diving team was unable to surpass weekend leaders Akron (1189), Buffalo (1225) and Ohio (1318), and held its position of fourth-place and final tally of 1145.5.

Head coach Steve Paska feels the weekend's meet was successful.

"I give credit to the three leading schools this weekend," Paska said. "Ohio, Buffalo and Akron each have great swimming and diving programs, and each school gave strong performances this weekend."

Although falling just short of the top-three, the Redbirds finished Sunday in the same fashion as the first-two days of the invitational by setting more personal- and season-best times.

In the 1650-yard freestyle four Redbirds placed in the top-12. Michele Stoeppelman finished in third-place with a time of 17:25.05, Lauren Terzis close behind in sixth with a 17:30.25 time, Ashley Bachler with a season-best time of 17:47.77 in 11th and in 12th Danielle Schumacher achieved a personal-best time of 17:48.68.

Molly Gomberg added to her weekend of achievements with both a personal-best of 2:05.99 in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries and a sixth-place finish in the finals. Swimming a season-best in the 200-back was Brianna Winkler with a time of 2:15.77.

Jessica McGee and Kelly Healy swam personal-bests in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 54.35 and 55.80. Amy Schaefer and Jeanette Nolte both reached for season-best times of 53.15 and 53.30.

In the 200-yard breaststroke Lindsay Dinkelman finished in eighth-place in the finals after setting a season-best 2:26.02 in the preliminaries. Also setting season-best times were Caitlin Falconer (2:27.47), Sarah Piechocinski (2:29.88) and Morgan Buechele (2:32.60).

Gomberg finished in fourth-place in the 200-yard butterfly finals and set a season-best time of 2:08.52 in the preliminaries. Amber Siggins also acquired a season-best in the preliminaries with a time of 2:13.34. Adding support for the Redbirds in the finals was Sarah Rendek with a seventh-place finish.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay Illinois State's A-relay, Schaefer, Nolte, McGee and Terzis, set a season-best time of 3:35.73 while taking eighth-place.

Head coach Paska feels the team has room for improvement.

"We had an impressive amount of personal- and season-best times and set a couple records this weekend," Paska said. "But we need to be just as successful as a whole, as we are successful individually. I think that we learned a great deal this weekend that will allow us to grow as a team, and we know deep down that better things are yet to come."

After traveling back to Illinois State the swimming and diving team will have three weeks off of competition before traveling to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the Ed Kennedy Invitational December, 31 2009, at 10 a.m., central.
