Illinois State Falls to SEMO Despite High Scores

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - The Illinois State gymnastics team fell to Southeast Missouri State,194.150-193.775, despite a season-best score on the balance beam. The meet marked the second loss of the season to SEMO.

Head coach Bob Conkling couldn't be happier with the way the Redbirds performed against the Redhawks.

"I am extremely pleased with the way the team performed tonight," said Conkling. "They held strong throughout the entire competition with no falls. The bottom line is the student-athletes did an amazing job tonight."

Illinois State started the evening off on the uneven bars. Junior Jessica Prousa placed third for the `Birds with a 9.750, a season best. Sophomore Emily Matko placed fourth in the event with a 9.700, marking another season-best for the Redbirds. ISU had a total team score of 48.375, their second highest total of the season on the bars.

On the vault, senior Meaghan Koshman tied for third place with a 9.750. Illinois State recorded a team score of 48.225.

The gymnasts picked up momentum going into their floor routines and tallied a team total of 48.650. Sophomore Erica Schick and Koshman tied for sixth place in the event with a 9.775. They were followed closely by sophomores Hannah Deutsch and Matko who tied for eighth place with a 9.725.

The `Birds finished the night with their best balance beam score of the season, 48.525. Deutsch, the only Redbird to place first an event won on the beam with a 9.800. Freshman Melissa Mann placed third for the Redbirds with a 9.725. Schick and Koshman tied for fourth with a 9.700. This marked Koshman's debut on the balance beam.

In the all-around for the Redbirds was sophomore Erica Schick who placed third with a 38.775, a season best.

Illinois State returns home Sunday, Feb. 22 to host UW-La Crosse. The meet is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Horton Field House. This will be the second time the `Birds have faced the Eagles this season.
