MIAMI -
Junior Marisa Milligan shot a 1-over-par 73 and led the Illinois State women's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Qdoba Invitational Sunday. The event is being held at the Don Shula Golf Resort where the Redbirds shot a first-round 18-hole team score of 304. Milligan is currently in a nine-way tie for sixth place. The course is measured at 6,223 yards with a par 72.
"We are going to be able to take positive points away from today," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Marisa (Milligan) played well by shooting a 73 and led the team today. We had everyone stay within reach of where we need to be, but tomorrow we have to break 300 as a team, shoot more birdies shots and make fewer mistakes. I think we did very well for the first round of the spring season. I am proud of the team."
Junior Laura Harris is currently in a tie for 24th place with a first-round score 4-over-par 76. Harris and Milligan were the only Redbirds to place in the top-25 after the first day of competition. Senior Marci Hill is in a tie for 30th place with a score of 77. Junior Stacey Miller is in 40th place after shooting a 6-over-par 78, while senior Tiffany Hockensmith carded a first-round score 80 and is currently in a tie for 49th place.
Illinois State is currently leading Miami (305), Augusta State (310), South Florida (311), UNC-Greensboro (318), Mercer (326) and Memphis (327). Georgia State is ahead of the field with a team score of 291, while North Carolina State is in second place with a 294 and Louisville rounds out the top three with a team score of 299.
The Qdoba Invitational will continue tomorrow with a shot gun start beginning at 11:30 a.m. CST.
