Seniors Lead `Birds to a 14th-Place Finish at Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C - Seniors Tiffany Hockensmith and Marci Hill made big contributions to the Illinois State women's golf team, as they led the Redbirds to a third-round score of 301 and a final team score of 926 (320-305-301). Hockensmith and Hill each fired a 1-over-par 73 during the third round of play at the Kiawah Island Classic. The `Birds ended the tournament in tie for 14th place with Oral Roberts on the par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course.

"I am extremely proud of the way we played today," said head coach Darby Sligh. "The two seniors really stepped up, which enabled us to move up a few spots. The conditions were tough and very cold, but we were able to rise to the occasion. We finished very well today and are gaining confidence as the season continues."

Hockensmith (81-74-73) ended the tournament in an eight-way tie for 25th place, while Hill (81-78-73) finished in a nine-way tie for 48th place. Junior Stacey Miller carded her best round of the tournament with a 5-over-par 77. Miller finished the Classic with a three-round score of 244 (87-80-77).

Junior Marisa Milligan tallied a third-round score of 78, and finished the tournament in a five-way-tie for 57th place with a final score of 233 (79-76-78). Rounding out the top-five for the Redbirds was junior Laura Harris, who fired a final-round score of 79 for a total score of 235 (79-77-79). Harris ended the tournament in a nine-way tie for 66th place.

Illinois State defeated Valley rivals Missouri State (978), Southern Illinois (990) and Bradley (994). Miami (300-305-299) and Central Arkansas (310-300-294) tied for first place with a team total of 904, while East Tennessee State took third place with a 908 team score.

Nicole Forshner (Central Arkansas) and Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) tied for first place individually with a 218. Sara Grantham (Mississippi), Steffi Kirchmayr (College of Charleston) and Jessica Yadloczky (Florida) tied for third place with a total of 220.

The Redbirds will have a brief break before they compete again at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational Mar. 6-8. The event will be held at the Rio Verde Country Club.
