Tiffany Hockensmith Named Co-MVC Golfer of the Week

Feb. 27, 2009

ST LOUIS - After firing a third round 1-over-par 73 and leading the Illinois State women's golf team to a 14th place tie at the Kiawah Island Classic, senior Tiffany Hockensmith was name the Co-Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon. Hockensmith finished the tournament in an eight-way tie for 25th place with a 12-over-par 228 (81-74-73) on the par-72 course.

"I am very excited to see Tiffany get recognized for her performance this past week," said head coach Darby Sligh. "To finish in the top-25 in a very strong field of over 215 girls, on two difficult golf courses, is a great accomplishment. I couldn't be more proud of the way she fought back from a tough first round. I'm looking forward to seeing what this momentum will bring for Tiffany next week in Arizona."

On Sunday, Hockensmith carded a 9-over-par first-round score of 81. On Monday, the second day of the tournament, the Bloomington, Ind., native tallied a 36-hole total of 155 (81-74). During the second round, Hockensmith carded a 2-over-par 74 and used her momentum in the third day of competition and tallied a final-round 1-over-par 73.

Hockensmith shared the honor with Drake's Olivia Lansing. Hockensmith is the second Redbird to receive the award in two weeks. Senior Marci Hill was named Golfer of the Week last week (Feb. 18).

Hockensmith finished in the top-25 out of 215 golfers at the Kiawah Island Classic. The tournament featured 43 teams, 21 of which are currently ranked in the top 100 by Golfweek, which made it the largest collegiate women's event in the country.

The Redbirds' next tournament will be Mar. 6-8 at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational. The three-day event will be held at the Rio Verde Country Club.
