Redbirds Tanja Hrovatic, Hannah Esker and Julia Zubkova all won their third-straight singles matches as Illinois State bested Eastern Illinois, 6-1, Friday at Evergreen Racquet Club.
Hrovatic bested Abby Allgire of EIU, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight 4 singles. Redbird teammate Zubkova defeated Hayley Homburg (EIU) 6-3, 6-3, in Flight 1, while Esker bested Annie Egan (EIU) 6-1, 6-2, in Flight 6.
Illinois State (5-3) continued its winning ways with Franziska Steinhardt besting Cara Huck, 6-2, 6-3, in Flight 2, while Natalia Lech defeated Eastern Illinois's (3-6) Amanda Dibbs, 6-0, 6-3, in Flight 3 singles.
Illinois State's only loss came in Flight 5 singles. EIU's Juliana Frey topped Carmen Peters in a super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
The Redbirds opened the contest by sweeping the Panthers in doubles play to lead the match, 1-0. In Flight 2, the Redbird duo of Lech and Hrovatic snapped Cara Huck's and Juliana Frey's (EIU) four-match winning streak, 8-0. In Flight 1, Zubkova and Steinhardt bested Amanda Dibbs and Abby Allgire (EIU), 8-2, and the Redbird pairing of Peters and Esker defeated EIU's Hayley Homburg and Shannon Brooks, 8-6.
In doubles, the teams of Esker and Peters as well as Hrovatic and Lech have won three-straight doubles matches.
"I am very happy with the team's performance," said head coach Chris Hoover. "The girls were very disciplined, and they are improving every time we play. Eastern Illinois has always been a tough opponent. I just want the girls to keep fighting hard in every match."
The Redbirds will return to action Friday (March 6) at 6 p.m. when they face DePaul in Chicago, Ill.
