Redbirds Take First at Baylor Spring Invitational

WACO, Texas - The Illinois State women's golf team maintained its momentum from Monday's rounds and ended the Baylor Spring Invitational in first place with a final-team score of 927 (308-307-312). The Redbirds' win is the team's first win in a tournament this season. ISU defeated the 14-team field on the par-72 Twin Rivers Golf Club.

"I can't be more proud of what we accomplished this week," said head coach Darby Sligh. "This win was a culmination of two months worth of unrecognized effort and this will be a huge stepping stone leading up to the conference tournament. I am very proud of Stacey (Miller) and how consistent she has been for two weeks in a row."

The Redbirds were led by juniors Stacey Miller and Marisa Milligan, who each finished within the top-10 individually. Miller fired a 12-over-par three-round score of 228 (77-75-76) and finished in a tie for fourth place, while Milligan carded a 14-over-par 230 (76-78-76) and ended the tournament in a tie for eighth place.

Junior Laura Harris shot a three-round score 233 (79-75-79) and finished in a six-way tie for 14th. Senior Tiffany Hockensmith finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 32nd place with a 23-over-par 54-hole score of 239 (79-79-81). Senior Marci Hill completed the tournament with a final score of 242 (76-81-85), which placed her in a two-way tie for 41st place.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Britt Knutson, who competed individually and finished the competition with a 249 (83-80-86).

New Mexico State moved up the leaderboard into second place with a 931 (316-303-312), while Baylor (315-302-316) and Missouri State (306-317-310) tied for third place with a final-team score of 933. The Redbirds also bested Valley foe Wichita State (994).

Kate Ackerson (SMU) won the field with a 7-over-par 223 (74-74-75), while Suteera Chanachai (New Mexico State) took second place with a final score of 225 (76-74-75). Pennapa Pulsawath (Iowa State) came in third with a 54-hole score of 227 (76-74-77).

The Redbirds will take a break for the rest of March and will return to action April 6-7 at the Indiana University Invitational. The two-day event will be held at the Otter Creek Golf Club.
