NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore Filip Miljevic secured the, 5-2, victory for the Illinois State men's tennis team, as he defeated Pawel Poziomski in No. 2 singles. The Redbirds defeated Northern Illinois Saturday, at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts. Illinois State swept NIU in doubles competition, winning all three matches and four singles matches. The team improved its season record to 5-8 and remains undefeated on its home turf.

In singles, Miljevic bested Poziomski, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles, and Skip Span defeated Matt Hansen, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Timon Reichelt topped Jurica Grubisic in No. 1 singles, 0-6, 6-0, 6-1.

In No. 4 singles, Daniel Tobar beat Shaun Stewart in a super tie-breaker, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Michael Hobson lost to Javier Bernabe, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, at the No. 5 position, while Micah LeMoine fell to Ross Vander-Ploeg, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, in No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Tobar and LeMoine won the No. 3 doubles match in a tie-breaker, 8-7, over Hansen and Jimmy Chu. At the No. 1 spot, Span and Miljevic outplayed Grubisic and Poziomski, 8-5, while Hobson and Reichelt beat Stewart and Vander-Ploeg, 8-6, in No. 2 doubles.

"We had a great team effort against Northern Illinois," said head coach Cris James. "We played with a lot of confidence. I'm hoping we can continue to build of this for conference play."

Illinois State will take a short break from its spring schedule before facing Valley foes Bradley and Wichita State.The Redbirds will travel to Peoria, Ill., Friday, April 3, to play Bradley at 2 p.m. at the Markin Tennis Courts. The team hosts Wichita State Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m., at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill.
