Joe Emerich led the Illinois State men's golf team to a share of seventh place Sunday after he carded a 2-over par 72 in the first round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.

The Redbirds shot a 304 on the par-72 and sit in a four-way tie for seventh place, five back of the leaders. Emerich was low for the `Birds, after tallying a 74 and is currently tied for 11th place. Kyle Bragg shot a 4-over par 76 and holds a share of 27th place.

"I was proud of how we played and that we were able to stay mentally tough," said head coach Ray Kralis. "The top-12 teams are all bunched together with only seven strokes separating them, which makes tomorrow a moving day for us."

Will Cullen, Jeff Kellen and Ben Murphy all shot a 77 and are tied for 34th place. Competing as an individual is junior Tommy Bliefnick, who is currently tied for 53rd place after shooting a 7-over par 79.

The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
