March 28, 2009

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team will try to remain undefeated at home as it continues Missouri Valley Conference play Sunday by hosting the 2008 MVC regular-season and tournament champions Indiana State at noon at Bloomington's Evergreen Racquet Club. The Redbirds are 3-0 at home this season.

"It will be tough to play the conference champions in the first weekend of conference play," said head coach Chris Hoover. "However, we have to take the matches as they come. Indiana State is a great team, but we will be ready to fight and see how we match up Sunday (March 29)."

The Redbirds swept the Bradley Braves, 7-0, in their last match Friday (March 27). The Redbirds are now have an overall record of 9-6 overall and 1-0 in the Valley, while winning four-straight matches.

The Sycamores are coming off a 5-2 victory over Middle Tennessee State Saturday (March 21) and have a 2-8 overall dual record so far this season. Indiana State will play its first MVC match on Saturday (March 28) against Bradley before facing Illinois State Sunday (March 29) in Normal, Ill. The Sycamores went undefeated in conference play in 2008, going 11-0.

The Indiana State Sycamores narrowly lead the all-time series, 19-18, over the Illinois State Redbirds. The last time the two teams met was March 29, 2008, where the Sycamores bested the Redbirds, 5-2, at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The match was the Redbirds first conference lost of the 2008 dual season.
