Bragg Earns Second MVC Golfer of the Week Award

March 4, 2009

ST. LOUIS - Junior men's golfer Kyle Bragg was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon. Bragg scored Illinois State's lone point against No. 7 Illinois Saturday (Feb. 28) in the sixth annual Tinervin Cup by firing a 4-over par 75 to defeat Chris DeForest (79).

The event, which was a change from traditional stroke scoring, featured three two-on-two, head-to-head, better-ball matches in the morning and six individual head-to-head, stroke-based matches in the afternoon. Each separate match was worth one of nine team points.

Bragg and teammate Tommy Bliefnick were defeated by DeForest and Luke Guthrie of Illinois, 5&4, in the morning session. Bragg rebounded, winning the head-to-head matchup against DeForest by a convincing four strokes.

"It's great to see Kyle rewarded and pick up that point for us," said head coach Ray Kralis. "It just shows his competitiveness and will to win. This is attributed to the type of players we have at Illinois State."

Bragg and the Redbirds will travel to Limestone, Ala., to participate in the Samford Intercollegiate March 10-11 at Limestone Springs Golf Course.
