Want to know what your favorite Illinois State student-athletes are really thinking, both on-and-off the court? How about what is their favorite thing to do in their spare time, or who is their funniest teammate or what is on their mind as they go through a practice or game? Well, look no further, as GoRedbirds.com and Redbird All-Access have you covered with a new video feature series that will give Redbird student-athletes a chance to talk and speak their minds on a weekly basis.
Up this week is sophomore softball player Abby Olson, who is a rising star on a talented Illinois State softball team.
Olson entered her freshman campaign with the Redbirds in 2008 with a lot of talent and a whole lot of expectations behind her to become Illinois State's next big power hitter. The Hartsburg, Ill., native has done more than just live up to those expecations, as she has catapulted herself to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference as one of its leading power hitters.
Olson was named a preseason All-Valley selection in 2009 after a year in which she tied and then set the Illinois State single-game RBI record with an astonishing seven runs driven in at Northern Iowa May 4. Perhaps even more impressive than that feat was the fact that she hit three home runs in that game - one each over the left-, center- and right-field fences.
Check out Olson's interview to the right and hear Abby talk about what it takes to keep her power-hitting groove going and what the Redbird softball team is doing this season to get back to the NCAA Tournament.
Olson and the Illinois State softball team return to action Friday through Sunday when they play in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Tournament in Stanford, Calif.
