Redbirds Finish Day One in Top Five

RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Junior Stacey Miller led the Illinois State women's golf team to a first-round team score of 311 after the first day of play at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational on the Quail Run Golf Course Friday. Miller fired a 5-over-par 76 and is currently in a 10-way tie for 17th place. The Redbirds are sitting in a four-way tie for 5th place.

"We really struggled on the greens today (Friday)," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Tomorrow is a day for adjustments. We will spend our time focusing on the things we did well today. I know we will come out and play well tomorrow."

Senior Marci Hill and junior Marisa Milligan each carded an 18-hole score of 78. The duo is currently in a 12-way tie for 31st place. Junior Laura Harris tallied an 8-over-par 79 and is in a 10-way tie for 43rd place on the par-71 course. Rounding out the top five for the Redbirds is senior Tiffany Hockensmith, who carded a first-round score of 82.

Kansas is currently at the top of the leaderboard with a team score of 294. Toledo is in second place with a 304, while Northern Arizona sits in third with a first-round score of 308. The Redbirds are currently ahead of Missouri Valley Conference rivals Southern Illinois (314), Missouri State (318) and Bradley (323).

Kalynd Carson (Kansas) and Michelle Hui (Toledo) are leading the field with a 1-over-par 72, while Hanna Ek (Akron) and Meghan Gockel (Kansas) share third place with a 73.

The Redbirds will continue the tournament Saturday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CST.
