Redbirds Finish Fifth in ASU Red Wolf Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Illinois State men's golf team finished in fifth place at the ASU Red Wolf Classic at Sage Meadows Golf Club behind the efforts of Tommy Bliefnick and Joe Emerich Tuesday, who both finished tied for 12th place in the 54-hole event.

The Redbirds shot a three-round total of 880 (293-291-296) and finished in fifth place out of a 14-team field. Bliefnick (73-72-73) and Emerich (71-73-74) both carded a 2-over-par 218 on the 6,565-yard course, which put them in 12th place. Jeff Kellen finished tied for 26th after he tallied a 74-73-76--223 on the par-72.

"We played well this tournament, we just didn't get the real low number we needed," said head coach Ray Kralis. "I know the team would have liked to get a win under their belt after being in contention so many times this year. Hopefully we will be able to carry the momentum we have accumulated throughout the year into the conference tournament next week."

Will Cullen carded a 225 (75-73-77) and has a share of 34th place, while Kyle Bragg posted a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish tied for 49th place (78-77-73--228). Ben Murphy competed as an individual and ended the event tied for 55th, netting a 78-74-77--229.

Louisiana-Lafayette took team honors after shooting 289-293-285--867, while Kyle Pritchard of Louisiana-Lafayette; Jad Sinclair of Central Arkansas; and Todd Obergoenner of Southern Illinois tied for individual honors, with each shooting a 211. Illinois State finished in front of Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois (889).

The Redbirds will compete in the State Farm Missouri Valley Championship at the Dalhousie Golf Club April 27-28 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
