The Illinois State women's golf team will travel to its final event of the spring season this weekend at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships at the par-72 Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora, Iowa. The Redbirds will compete at the three-day, 54-hole event as the tournament favorite, which is set to begin Friday.
Illinois State, which is the defending conference champion, was picked to win the 2009 State Farm MVC Women's Golf Championship, according to a pre-championship poll of league coaches. ISU received eight first-place votes and a total score of 98 points. Drake was picked to finish second in the tournament with a total of 91 points and two first-place votes.
"This tournament means so much to this team," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We have prepared relentlessly for this opportunity to defend our title and get back to the NCAA Regionals. We are all excited to get the event started and play to the best of our ability."
Illinois State will take five student-athletes to the three-day Valley Championship. ISU's line-up will consist of seniors Tiffany Hockensmith and Marci Hill, along with juniors Laura Harris, Stacey Miller and Marisa Milligan.
The course is measured at 6,000 yards. Friday's 18 holes will have assigned tee times. ISU will begin play at 9:48 a.m.
