CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Will Cullen shot a 7-over-par 151 (80-71) in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship at Dalhousie Golf Club Monday and led the Illinois State men's golf team to second place after 36 holes of play.
The Redbirds shot a two-round total of 604 (303-301) in the opening day of competition and trail Wichita State by 13 strokes (591). Cullen's 151 on the par-72 earned him a share of fourth place, while Kyle Bragg (70-82) and Tommy Bliefnick (77-75) finished tied for seventh place after posting a 152.
"Our team score was a little higher than usual Monday and that dug us into a little hole," said head coach Ray Kralis. "However, I've been around this squad and I know that we have the caliber of players to make up those strokes against a very talented Wichita State team."
Sophomore Jeff Kellen shot a 76-79--155 and is currently tied for 16th place, while Joe Emerich rounded out the scoring for the Redbirds after tallying a two-round-total of 157 (81-76) and finishing the day tied for 21st.
The Wichita State Shockers are leading the event after carding a two-round-total of 295-296--591, while Dustin Garza of Wichita State leads the tournament after firing an even-par 144 (73-71).
The Redbirds will tee-off at 9:40 a.m., Tuesday for the conclusion of the 54-hole event.
