Junior Stacey Miller led the Illinois State women's golf team to 10th-place finish after the first day of competition at the Indiana Invitational. The Redbirds fired a two-round team score 646 (326-320) on the par-72 Otter Creek Golf Club. Miller carded a 10-over par two-round score 154 (76-78) and is currently in a three-way tie for fifth place.
"Today was a test of survival," said head coach Darby Sligh. "With rain, sleet and winds all day, the weather definitely played a huge role in our inability to score. I am very proud of the way Stacey held things together, and also the way Laura (Harris) bounced back from her morning round. The team really showed guts today and we are looking forward to tomorrow's round."
Junior Marisa Milligan is currently in a three-way tie for 27th place with a 17-over par two-round score of 161 (79-82), while junior Laura Harris shot a 162 (85-77) and is sitting in a three-way tie for 30th place. Senior Tiffany Hockensmith finished the first day of play in a three-way tie for 58th place with a two-round score of 170 (87-83). Senior Marci Hill rounded out the top-five for the Redbirds with a 171 (86-85).
Junior Britt Knutson, who is competing individually, recorded a 36-hole score of 165 (84-81) and is sitting in five-way tie for 41st place.
UNLV is currently leading the field with a two-round team total of 626 (317-309), while Iowa State sits in second place with a team score of 633 (323-310). Texas, Michigan and Iowa are all tied for third place with a 635. Illinois State is two strokes behind in-state rival Illinois, which is currently in ninth place.
Natasha Krishna (UNLV) and Nicole Vandermade (Texas) are currently tied for first and at the top of the leaderboard with a five-over par 149, while Elise Swartout (Western Michigan) is in third place with a 150.
Tuesday's 18 holes are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start.
