Gorrell Named First-Team Valley Scholar-Athlete

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior catcher Casey Gorrell was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, as announced by the league office Monday. Gorrell was named to the scholar-athlete first team for the first time in her career.

Gorrell batted .291 (44-151) in her final season with six doubles, nine home runs and 24 RBI. She had a .510 slugging percentage and a .395 on-base percentage. She had seven multi-hit games on the year, including a 4-for-5 performance with five RBI against UNC-Greensboro. Gorrell started all 50 games behind the plate for the Redbirds, recording a .993 fielding percentage and throwing out 73.2 percent of would-be base stealers (11-30).

The Olathe, Kan., native has a 3.44 grade-point average (GPA) in deaf and hard of hearing education. She has been named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll every semester at Illinois State and was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team this season.

The MVC Scholar-Athlete Team is voted on by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible, a player must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing with one season at the Valley institution and participate in 75 percent or her team's games or the Valley Championship.
