NORMAL, Ill. -
In Tim Jankovich's first two seasons as the head basketball coach at Illinois State, the "Voice of the Redbirds" Dick Luedke has gotten a lot of practice with his three-point call. And there's no reason why that trend won't continue this upcoming season.
In his first season at ISU, Jankovich's Redbirds set the school standard with 255 made threes. The mark lasted about 365 days, as the 2008-09 Redbirds sank a record 297 treys on the year.
Last season, the Redbirds averaged 8.7 made three-pointers per game. Illinois State also had four players make 50 or more threes in a season for the first time in school history. Champ Oguchi led the way with 90 three-pointers and was followed by Osiris Eldridge (72), Lloyd Phillips (52) and Emmanuel Holloway (51).
With 90 threes, Oguchi became only the second player in Redbird history to make 90 or more three pointers in a single season. He finished only three made triples behind school-record holder Jeff Harris, who dropped 93 treys during the 1986-87 season.
The Redbirds also attempted the most threes in ISU history during the 2008-09 season with 781 tries from beyond the arc. Illinois State made 38 percent of its three-point attempts, which is the fifth-best three-point field goal percentage in program history.
