After going into double overtime, the Illinois State women's soccer team tied UNLV, 1-1, Friday at the UNLV Nike Classic Tournament in Las Vegas as Redbird senior Ammanda Wisniewski scored the Redbirds' first goal of the season.
Jessica Carlson, Alyssa Schulz, Erin Egolf and Wisniewski all recorded two shots on the game for the Redbirds, while Carlson recorded one point for the assist.
Sasha Reiber played all 110 minutes as goalkeeper for the Redbirds, recording three saves and one goal allowed.
The Redbirds got off to a slow start in the first half with the Rebels scoring the first goal 27 minutes into the game. Colette Jepson scored off a 30 yard cross from Ashleigh Shoughro to give the Rebels the lead. The Redbirds recorded no shots in the first half, while the Rebels recorded six.
ISU switched gears after halftime, and in the second half, ISU recorded five shots-on-goal including Wisniewski's game-tying header off a corner kick from Carlson 68 minutes into the game.
The Redbirds had some scoring chances in both overtimes, outshooting the Rebels 5-1 in overtime, but the Rebel's goalkeeper Alicia Lugo recorded three saves in overtime with seven total saves on the night.
"UNLV certainly won the first half, but I think the second half and overtime definitely belonged to us," said head coach Drew Roff. "Unfortunately, we gave up that early goal, but I'm really proud of the way we fought back and controlled the game in the second half. We had a couple of great chances in overtime, and it would have been nice to get the first season win. However, I'm pleased with the way we played, and we handled the weather well. We had a couple of players come off the bench who really stepped it up for us like Wisniewski. It really shows our depth as a team."
The tie game left both the Redbirds and the Rebels looking for their first win of the season with 0-1-1 overall records.
ISU concludes the UNLV Nike Classic Sunday by playing New Mexico at 12:30 p.m.
