RIVERSIDE, Iowa –Illinois State senior Tommy Bliefnick’s third-round score of 74 helped solidify himself in a tie for 14th place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Club in Riverside, Iowa, Tuesday. The ‘Birds wrapped up the three-day tournament with a final score of 890 putting them in 10th place in the field of 15 teams.
Men’s golf head coach Ray Kralis was happy to see where his team stands after playing against a competitive field.
“We can certainly find some positives from this tournament,” Kralis said. “I think we are seeing signs that we are certainly ahead of where we were a year ago. It was a very competitive field and it gave us a sense of where we stack up and we believe, from a team standpoint, that we’ve got a lot in the tank that we didn’t show today. We’ve got to build from here and keep moving forward.”
Senior Kyle Bragg posted an even-par 72 to move him up to a tie for 22nd place. Senior Joe Emerich had a strong finish with a 1-over-par 73 to put him in a tie for 47th place. Sophomore Eric Meier’s 8-over-par 80 dropped him into a tie for 57th place while junior Drew North finished with a 7-over-par 79 to put him in 71st place.
Florida State won the tournament with a final score of 11-under-par 853, Iowa took second place carding a 3-under-par 861 and Coastal Carolina rounded out the top-three with a 2-over-par 866.
Brad Hopfinger of Iowa and Drew Kittleson of Florida State tied for first place after both posted a 9-under-par 207. Hudson Johnson of Vanderbilt placed third with a 7-under-par 209.
The Redbirds next tournament will be Sept. 14-15 in Nebraska City, Neb., at the Fairway Club Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held at the Arbor Links Golf Course.
