Illinois State's Filip Miljevic and Micah LeMoine will be among the four Redbirds competing in tomorrow's finals at the Louisville Invitational. The team will have a representative in all three singles Flights and a team contending in Flight A doubles. Head coach Cris James has high expectations for his players entering Sunday's matches.
"Overall the team improved a lot," James said. "I think winning at least two out of four finals would be a good weekend for us."
Junior Timon Reichelt advanced to Flight A singles by defeating Tennessee's Edward Jones, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinal round of Flight B singles, a faceoff between Miljevic and senior Xavier Riart-Ferrer resulted in Miljevic advancing to the finals by a score of, 6-1, 6-3. LeMoine will compete in Flight C singles after defeating Eastern Kentucky's Emilio Piriz, 6-4, 6-3, on Friday.
In doubles, the Redbirds were dealt some tough losses on Saturday but the combination of Alex Pelaez and Miljevic advanced to the final in Flight A doubles after defeating Louisville's Andrew Carter and Adam Donaldson, 8-5.
"Filip and Alex have the potential to be a great team," James said. "They are heading into Sunday's final with a good chance to win."
In consolation play, Pelaez came away with a victory in Flight A singles, defeating Louisville's Sumit Gupta, 6-3, 6-1. Matej Zlatkovic defeated Vincennes' Lendl Smith when Smith withdrew after six games because of muscle cramps.
"Both Alex and Matej improved their play greatly compared to Friday," James said. "They each played some tough competition and came away with solid wins."
Overall, the Redbirds posted a 7-5 record on the day. James was happy with the results but admitted the team has room for improvement, especially on the doubles court.
"I would like to see us figure out the right combination on the doubles court," James said. "Once we do that we can put together the strongest lineup for the spring season."
