LINCOLN, Neb. - Illinois State senior Stacey Miller led the Redbirds with a two-round, 5-over-par 146 (73-76) and is tied for 13th place after the first day of the Chip-N-Club Invitational at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course. A team score of 613 (306-307) places the `Birds in seventh out of the 14-team field.
"Today was a solid start for the Redbirds," said head coach Darby Sligh. "The seniors stepped up and held us together for both rounds, while our freshman helped to finish out the second round."
Miller finished the first round with a 1-over-par 73 to tie Julia Potter of Missouri and Maddie Sheils of Nebraska for seventh place individually. Seniors Laura Harris and Marisa Milligan tied for 19th with a 4-over-par 76, while sophomore Hannah Bachman and freshman Katie Jean tied for 18th with a 9-over-par 81. The Redbirds finished the first round in seventh place with a team score of 306.
Harris was the star of the second round having birdied three holes to shoot a 3-over-par 75. Harris ended the first day tied for 18th place. Miller wasn't far behind with a 76, followed by Mulligan with a 5-over-par 77 to tie for 26th place. Jean fired a solid 79 to tie for 52th place, while Bachman tied for 71st place with an 84.
"Today's conditions were ideal, and I like the way we attacked the course today," Sligh said. "Although we played solidly, we still have a few things to work on to get to where we want to be. I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond in tomorrow's final round."
Missouri takes the lead with a two-round score of 590 (299-291), Nebraska 594 (304-290) and Sacramento State 594 (300- 294) are tied for second and Kansas shot a 596 (301-295) to place in fourth for the day.
Amy Anderson of North Dakota State is in the lead with a 3-under-par 141 (69-72). Emily Powers of Kansas and Julie Shutler of Sacramento State are tied for second with a 2-under-par 142 (70-72).
