NORMAL, Ill. - Junior Mallory Leggett led the Redbirds with 13 kills and 13 digs, while senior Jessica Pratapas added 20 assists as Illinois State (5-6) defeated SIU Edwardsville, 3-0, (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) at Redbird Arena Tuesday night.
Freshman Angelo Rego recorded seven kills, while sophomore Tabitha Visk and junior Katie Culbertson had six apiece. Sophomore Kristin Stauter added 16 assists. Senior Kasey Mollerus tied Leggett for the team high in digs with 13.
SIUE's (0-12) Sydney Winslow led all players with 14 kills, while her teammate Sammi Minton recorded 31 assists and 16 digs.
The first set began with a kill by Visk as the Redbirds took a 3-0 lead. Both teams battled back and forth as they were tied at 14 apiece before ISU went on an 11-5 run to close it out 25-19. The set ended the way it started with a kill by Visk. The sophomore led the `Birds with four kills, while Jessica Pratapas had 10 assists.
The `Birds built a 20-12 lead in the second set. SIUE battled back to bring it within five to 20-15, but ISU refused to relinquish their lead for a 25-19 set victory. Leggett led the way with six kills while Pratapas recorded another 10 assists.
In the third set, ISU jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. The `Birds led by as many as nine points as they built their lead to 22-13. SIUE fought back as they brought it to within six points before the Redbirds took the final set 25-17.
The Redbirds' next match will be at Missouri State Friday at 7 p.m.
