Redbird Soccer Shutout by Blue Demons, 2-0

Sept. 20, 2009

Box Score

CHICAGO - After a scoreless first half, the Illinois State women's soccer team allowed two second-half goals as it was defeated by DePaul, 2-0, Sunday at Wish Field, marking the Redbirds' fourth shutout loss this season.

Tara Strickland scored DePaul's first goal off a 20-yard free kick after a hand ball call on the Redbirds in the 59th minute of the game, recording her fourth goal of the season. Less than one minute later, DePaul's Lauren Pagone scored on a throw-in by Callie Hemming.

Despite seven Redbirds recording shots in the game, the Redbird offense could not capitalize. Afton Delvecchio, Alex Howell, Danielle Mutters, Mary Sahm, Jessica Carlson, Kelly Rosenthal and Raquel Rattray all recorded one shot on the day.

"We definitely created some chances on goal," said head coach Drew Roff. "We are having trouble putting the ball in the back of the net this season. We are still searching for that aspect of our game plan, but once again, I thought we played very hard. DePaul is a very athletic team, and the key is getting the early goal. We have not been doing that lately. Once DePaul scored, we kept fighting, but we could not come back. It is the same thing that has been happening to us all season. We knew our schedule would be challenging, but I think it is making us a stronger team as we get ready for conference play in two weeks."

Sasha Reiber recorded five saves on the day as goalkeeper for the Redbirds, allowing two goals. Claire Hanold played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Demons, earning the shutout win with five saves.

With loss, the Redbirds move to 2-5-1 overall this season, while the Blue Demons improve to 5-3-2.

Illinois State continues its four-game road trip Friday (Sept. 25), when it travels to Indianapolis, Ind., to play the Butler.
