NORMAL, Ill. -
After winning both games in a doubleheader against Iowa Sunday (Sept. 20), the Illinois State softball team returns home to host 2009 NJCAA Division II National Champions Heartland Community College Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Marian Kneer Stadium.
The Redbirds won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-0, after Jordan Birch pitched seven innings with 13 strikeouts. Freshman Elizabeth Kay's grand slam helped lead the Redbirds to a 5-4 victory in the second game.
In the regular-season, the Hawks went 50-8 overall with a 25-game winning streak to end the season with the 2009 NJCAA Division II National Championship.
"Heartland is coming off of an amazing season," said head coach Melinda Fischer. "We will be going up against a national champion on Wednesday. We have to be prepared mentally and physically. Heartland is a team we need to be able to complete with. We will also see them again at the Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship in a week and a half. Anytime we have the opportunity to face a team that has won a national championship, I think it's awesome for our program."
