In her first tournament of the season, Illinois State senior Britt Knutson fired a three-over-par 75 in the final round of the two-day Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational to place the Redbirds in fourth with a three-round score of 948 (329-309-310).
The poor weather conditions on Monday made for a tough first day, with strong winds and cold temperatures leading to high scores. Knutson shot the lowest-first round score for ISU with a 79, while the rest of her teammates carded scores in the 80's. In the second round, senior Marisa Milligan fired a two-over-par 74, while senior Stacey Miller carded a 76 to place the `Birds in third for the day.
In the third and final round, Knutson posted a 75 to end the tournament in a tie for 16th place with a three-round score of 235 (79-81-75). Miller dropped 11 places to finish tied for 18th individually with a total score of 236 (80-76-80). Milligan shot a 238 (87-74-77) to place in a tie for 24th. Seniors Christine Larson and Laura Harris ended the second day carding a 242 (83-80-79) and a 245 (87-79-79), respectively. Larson finished in a tie for 33rd place, while Harris tied for 41st.
Junior Terra Miller competed as an individual, carding an 87 on the first round and a 78 on the second and third rounds to end the tournament in a tie for 37th place.
"We just came up short today," said head coach Darby Sligh. "I'm very proud of the way we fought, but we couldn't stay away from the big numbers. Britt came through big for us in the final round and I'm excited for her."
Tulsa took the title of the 13-team field with a final score of 901 (309-302-290). Arkansas came in a close second after posting a 904 (308-305-291) and Kansas State finished in third, one stroke ahead of the fourth place `Birds with a 947 (329-313-305).
"We have a couple of days to regroup, and we will take full advantage of that before heading to Missouri," Sligh said.
ISU will continue the fall season at the Johnie Imes Invitational Oct. 5-6 in Columbia, Mo. The tournament will be played at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
