During the last two minutes of the first half, Illinois State (12-4, 5-1 MVC) stole the lead from Southern Illinois (3-13, 2-4 MVC) and went on to win, 88-78. Emily Hanley scored a career-high 14 points, while Ashleen Bracey had her fourth double-double of the season and 16th in her career with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Illinois State started the game shooting 3-for-14 from the field in the first seven minutes, as Southern Illinois built a 15-6 lead. The Redbirds went on a 21-7 run to take the lead for the first time, 39-32. Hanley capped the run with a block to start a fast break that ended in a three-pointer by Katie Broadway. Hanley then had an offensive rebound and layup at the halftime buzzer to extend the lead to nine points, 43-34. Illinois State finished the half shooting 15-of-33.
At the half, Bracey led all scorers with 13 points, while Hanley poured in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Southern Illinois was 15-for-35 from the field. Christine Presswood led the Salukis with 12 points and five rebounds at the half.
The Redbirds went on a 12-4 run over the Salukis to start the second half. Illinois State jumped to their largest lead of the game with 20 points at the 10 minute mark, but Southern Illinois fought back to cut the Redbirds lead to nine points.
Nicole Lewis was a force to be reckoned with in the second half as she ended the game with 19 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Maggie Krick chipped in 14 points and was the fourth Redbird in double figures in the victory.
Illinois State hosts Evansville Saturday at 4:05 p.m. on Doug Collins Court in Redbird Arena.
