ISU Hangs on for 70-66 Win Over SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Senior Maggie Krick came through in the clutch, scoring the final seven points to help Illinois State (8-5) hold of SIU Edwardsville (2-14), 70-66, in the first-ever meeting Monday night.  The Redbirds shot a season-best 53.1 percent from the field and overcame 23 turnovers.

Krick scored a game-high 21 points and had a season-high six assists. Senior Nicolle Lewis recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Emily Hanley scored a season-high 11 points and had two steals.

Playing just 11 miles from her hometown, sophomore Katie Broadway scored a career-high 14 points. Broadway shot 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point range, all career-best marks. She tied her previous career-high with 11 points in the first half on 4-of-5 shooting, including three three-pointers.

The Redbirds started the game by making their first four shots and six-straight points by Lewis put them ahead by 10, 30-20, with 8:39 remaining. SIUE kept it close with free throws and cut the deficit down to four points. Hanley and Broadway both hit three-pointers at the end of the half to give the Redbirds a 45-37 lead at the break.

Both teams had little trouble scoring in the first half, with the Redbirds shooting 60 percent (17-28) from the field and three-point range (6-10). SIUE shot 54.4 percent (12-22) from the field and was 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

As hot as the Redbirds were to start the game, they were equally as cold right after halftime. ISU didn't score on its first seven possessions and had six turnovers before the first media timeout, allowing SIUE to pull within three, 47-44.With the lead down to two points, Broadway connected on her fourth three-pointer and Hanley followed with a layup.

A jumper by Michaela Herrod pulled SIUE within one, 59-58, at the seven minute mark. ISU struggled through a near five-minute scoring drought, but SIUE was unable to capitalize, going more than five minutes without a score after the Herrod jumper.

Krick completed a three-point play as she was fouled on a driving jumper to give the Redbirds a five-point cushion, 66-61, with 1:21 remaining. She then iced the game with four free throws in the final six seconds. SIUE kept it interesting when Bey banked in a long three-pointer, but there wasn't enough time to pull off the comeback win.

Illinois State continues Missouri Valley Conference play at Indiana State Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. CST and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Midwest as the Valley Game of the Week.
