The Illinois State volleyball team (11-6, 1-3 MVC) fell to Creighton (9-6, 4-1 MVC) 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 23-25) at Redbird Arena Friday night. Freshman Shannon McGlaughlin led all Redbird hitters for the third-straight match with 16 kills.
Illinois State used six kills from four different players to build an 11-3 lead early in the first set. Creighton came back with a 7-2 run to pull within three points, 13-10, but would get no closer. Mallory Leggett had three kills to stretch the Redbird lead back to six, 18-12. Stauter finished off the set with a kill and the Redbirds won the first set, 25-20. Illinois State nearly doubled Creighton's kills, 19-10.
Creighton jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second set as the Redbirds committed three errors. The Bluejays took advantage of four Redbird errors to stretch their lead to 18-10. The Redbirds had five unanswered points late in the set, but it wasn't enough as Creighton held on to win the set 25-17. Creighton had 16 kills and only three errors in the set, and capitalized on seven errors from the Redbirds.
Illinois State scored the first two points of the third set, but Creighton answered with five straight points to take the lead, 5-2. Leggett had two kills to pull the Redbirds within two, but the Bluejays went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 17-11. Illinois State had a four point run of their own and cut Creighton's lead to two once again, but the Bluejays held on to win the set 25-19.
Two early errors for the Redbirds gave Creighton a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. After a kill by Tabitha Visk, Illinois State tied the set at 4-4. Creighton took advantage of more Redbird errors to extend their lead to 14-9. The Redbirds went on a 6-0 run to tie the set at 20-20. Creighton regained and maintained their lead to win the match 25-23.
Three Illinois State players recorded double-digit kills. McGlaughlin led the Redbirds with 16 kills, Leggett added 15 and Visk tallied 11 for the night. Leggett led the team with 21 digs, while Kristin Stauter and Laura Wakefield added 19 each. Stauter finished the evening with 46 assists, the most for the Redbirds this season in a four-set match.
Allie Oelke recorded a match-high 18 kills for the Bluejays, while Julianne Mandolfo added 29 digs in the winning effort. As a team, the Bluejays had 7.5 blocks and a .213 hitting percentage.
With the loss, the Redbirds drop to 11-6 and 1-3 in MVC matches. Creighton improves to 9-6 and 4-1 in the Valley. Illinois State will host Drake Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
