NORMAL, Ill. - The Reggies, Sponsored by State Farm Insurance, a ceremony celebrating the academic achievements, was held at Redbird Arena Sunday, Oct. 10. All 320 student-athletes who were named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll in 2009-10 were recognized and several special academic achievement awards were presented to student-athletes throughout the evening as well.
Senior cross country and track distance runner Scott Krapf received the Doug Collins Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the second-consecutive year. Krapf earned All-Valley recognition in cross country and track and field last season. He won the men's 8K cross country title with a time of 25:47 at the State Farm MVC Championship; the first Redbird champion since Christian Goy in 2002. In the outdoor track season, a time of 29:32.90 in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational qualified Krapf for the NCAA West Regional, where he placed 23rd. He is the fourth Redbird to win the Doug Collins Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award twice, joining Dan Muller, Jay Anderson and Adam Waugh.
Krapf, who maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a sports management graduate student, was a Valley Scholar-Athlete in both cross country and track. He is currently serving a term as vice chair of the Division I National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will be the chair next year.
The male scholar-athlete of the year award is named after Redbird basketball legend Doug Collins, who was an All-American in 1972 and went on to a successful playing, coaching and broadcasting career in the NBA. The other nominees for the Doug Collins Male Student-Athlete of the Year award were Eric Brunner (football), Ryan Court (baseball), Jeff Kellen (golf), Filip Miljevic (tennis) and Alex Rubin (basketball).
Former women's golfer Stacey Miller received the Linda Herman Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Miller guided the ISU women's golf team to its third-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Championship with another stellar year. She recorded six top-10 finishes and was the MVC Golfer of the Week four times. Miller finished third at the State Farm MVC Championship to receive All-Valley recognition for the third-straight year and tied for 22nd at the NCAA Central Regional.
Miller achieved a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team and the MVC Honor Roll. She was also honored with the MVC Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete award, which is presented annually to a student-athlete who epitomizes the principles of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.
The female scholar-athlete of the year award is named after longtime Illinois State coach and administrator Dr. Linda Herman, who spent more than 30 years at ISU as a volleyball coach and administrator. The other nominees for the Linda Herman Female Student-Athlete of the Year award were Bethany Brown (soccer), Hannah Deutsch (gymnastics), Maggie Krick (basketball), Olivia Myers (track and field), Katelyn Prorok (swimming and diving) and Megan Warner (softball).
The Impact Award was also presented to Miljevic. The award is given to a student-athlete who embodies a commitment to excellence and has a desire to make an impact on the lives of others with outstanding leadership skills, commitment to academics and service to the community.
The Phoenix Award was presented to women's gymnast Andrea Orris. The award is given to an individual who has overcome academic challenges and has made consistent academic progress over their scholastic careers.
The Good Neighbor Award went to women's basketball player Megan Grace. The award is presented to a student-athlete who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to excellence in academics, service to others and personal conduct. The individual also volunteers to assists fellow student-athletes in their endeavors to achieve their academic goals.
