The Illinois State Redbirds (12-9,2-5 MVC )were defeated in their first Missouri Valley Conference match of the weekend against No. 14 Northern Iowa (17-2,8-0 MVC) in a straight-set loss (19-25, 22-25, 10-25). Freshman Shannon McGlaughlin and senior Mallory Leggett combined for a total of 15 kills for the Redbirds.
Leggett led the Redbirds with nine kills for the match and McGlaughlin added six. Freshman Kelsey Holman recorded a career-high two kills. Sophomore Jenny Menendez had a match-high 13 digs.
Northern Iowa remained in the lead throughout the entire opening set and won, 25-19. UNI had 16 kills compared to Illinois State's eight. UNI's Amy Braun led all players with six kills, as McGlaughlin and Leggett led the Redbirds with three each. ISU had just a .029 hitting percentage in the set, with eight kills and seven errors on 34 attacks.
UNI started the second set with a 4-0 lead, and remained in front until the Redbirds tied the set at 9-9, forcing Northern Iowa to take a timeout. The Redbirds took the lead for the first time in the match, 12-11, as Leggett recorded a kill. After her kill, Leggett served four more points for the Redbirds, giving them a 15-11 lead. The Panthers tied the set again 17-17 and were able to hold Illinois State by a slim lead to win, 25-22.
The Panthers gained the lead early in the third set, 3-2, and Ellie Blankenship served a 9-0 run to put the Panthers ahead, 12-2.ISU senior Katie Culberston was able to break the Panthers' scoring streak with a kill, but the Panthers cruised to a 25-11 match-clinching win. UNI had 16 kills and a .375 hitting percentage in the set.
