Redbirds Defeat Purple Aces in Conference Dual Meet

Evansville, Ind. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team won their first conference dual meet of the season against the Purple Aces 168-132. The Redbirds earned multiple season best times and first place finishes throughout the competition leading them to victory against MVC rival Evansville.

Head swimming coach Steve Paska was very happy with the team's performance during the meet.

"This was a very competitive dual meet against Evansville and I was impressed with how the swimmers raced in their fourth week of competition," Paska said. "Our strength is in the depth of our team and we are getting faster each weekend. The total team performance is something we can continue to build and improve on."

Senior Amy Schaefer, sophomores Tori Alland and Danielle Schumacher and freshman Erica Halley placed first for the Redbirds during the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.11. Schumacher also placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle and earned a season best time of 10:31.81.

"Danielle swam a smart race and was able to catch up to Evansville during the last 500-600 yards, winning the race and earning a season best time," Paska said. "Having senior Lauren Terzis and junior Michele Stoeppelman swim third (10:40.18) and forth (10:52.93) was significant in leading us to win the meet."

Halley placed first in 50-yard freestyle (25.04) and 100-yard freestyle, were she earned a season best time of 53.66. Alland earned first place finishes during the both the 200-yard (1:56.36) and 500-yard freestyle (5:09.11).

"Erica has been an outstanding performer all four weekends and I am very impressed with her during her first season as a Redbird," Paska said. "She was a big contributor to our win at Evansville."

Junior Brittany Tazzioli placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 233.03, while sophomore Maureen Doyle finished third at 232.05.

"I was very happy with the diving performances at the Evansville meet," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Brittany and Maureen put together a good list of dives and completed them well."

Senior Liza Perrino finished first for the Redbirds and third overall in the 3-meter dives with a score of 238.35.

"Liza's performance was a great benchmark for where she is in the season," Hoffman said. "Freshman Maggie Kopp also competed very well in her first collegiate 3-meter dive event."

The Redbirds will compete Saturday October 23, in Cedar Falls, Iowa against the Northern Iowa Panthers at 10 a.m.
