From the opening introductions to the final buzzer of the men's scrimmage, the annual Illinois State Athletics HoopFest entertained approximately 3,000 fans inside historic Horton Field House.
During the men's scrimmage, White recorded a 35-29 win behind 11 points by Tony Lewis and 10 points from Austin Hill. White stormed out to a 10-4 lead after five points apiece from Lewis and Hill. Red knotted the game at 17-17, on Justin Clark's layup, but White closed the game with a 14-8 run for the win.
Lewis' 11 points were a game high and he shot 5-for-6 from the field, while Hill was 4-for-5, including 2-for-2 on threes. Kenyon Smith led the Red team with nine points, while Clark and Alex Rubin each tossed in eight apiece.
After warming up with a couple of full court drills, the women's team played a 10-minute scrimmage with the home team, ISU White, beating ISU Red, 18-12. Trailing by one point midway through the scrimmage, the White team scored nine unanswered points in just two minutes for the win.
Senior Hannah Spanich led the White team with five points, knocking down a jumper and a three-pointer. Junior Jamie Russell and sophomore Candace Sykes each scored four points for White, with Russell adding a pair of steals. The Red team was led by junior Katie Broadway, who had six points, and senior Shala Jackson, who added four.
Redshirt freshman Jon Ekey walked away with the dunk championship, after ousting sophomore John Wilkins in the final round. Ekey and Wilkins posted matching 46-point dunks in the first round of the finals, but Ekey's leap over senior Matt Coates garnered perfect 10s from the five judges. Wilkins tried to match the effort, but his version of the classic Julius "Dr. J" Erving free-throw line dunk came up just short.
Spanich and Anthony Cousin teamed to win the three-point competition. The duo recorded 16 makes in the championship round, including all six shots at the first rack, to defeat the team of Broadway and Rubin, who finished with 10.
The Redbird men's team will open its 2010-11 season Nov. 10 with an exhibition game against Quincy, while the ISU women begin their campaign Nov. 2, against Illinois-Springfield in an exhibition contest.
