URBANA, Ill. -
Selected members of the Illinois State women's cross country team finished sixth at the Illini Open Friday evening in Urbana, Ill., at the U of I Arboretum, while the men's individual runners finished in the top-20 in the 8K race. The women tallied 132 points in the 5K race.
The course ran faster than it normally does due to the dry conditions. The course at the U of I Arboretum is one of the most challenging courses ISU will run on this season.
"The women's team got off to a really strong start and ran the first mile well. They also finished strong, but we have to continue to work on the middle section of the race," said head cross country coach Jeff Bovee. "It was a positive step for the younger runners to get experience, and I thought they competed well."
Sophomore Brea Tinney was the first Redbird to cross the finish line in the 5K race. Tinney finished the race in 20th place with a time of 19:02 and was followed by freshman Kimberly Christensen, who ran the race in 19:20 and finished in 25th place. Freshmen Megan Fry (19:53) and Ruth Allen (19:55) took 39th and 40th, while freshman Juliet Vogel ran the race in 20:38 for 51st place.
In the men's race, sophomore Steven Regan crossed the finish line in 17th place with a time of personal-best time of 26:25, while Erik Stanton ran the 8K race in 26:34 and finished in 19th place.
"Steven and Erik ran well in today's race, and they ran most of the race together," said Bovee. "They ran a smart second half of the race, and I thought they ran a tough race."
Illinois State will compete at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships Oct. 30 in Wichita, Kan. The championships are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
