The Illinois State swimming and diving team won their second conference dual meet against Northern Iowa Saturday, October 23, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, 198-100. The Redbirds won 11 events and earned multiple season best times against the Panthers.
Head coach Steve Paska was very impressed with the team's performance in Cedar Falls.
"Very proud at how the team has performed during the fall part of the season," Paska said. "We want to swim and compete with consistency, which we have done for the last few weeks and take every opportunity to race in preparation for the rest of the season."
Sophomores Sarah Rendek, Lydia Ridgeway, and Morgan Buechele and freshman Erica Halley placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a team season best time of 1:50.05.
"We started out the meet with a first place finish in 200-yard medley relay and finished one, two, three in the 1000-yard freestyle," Paska said. "Those events really gave us the momentum we needed for the meet."
Sophomores Danielle Schumacher and Tori Alland, and senior Molly Gomberg all placed first in two events. Schumacher placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.80) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.47). Alland earned first place finished in the 100-yard freestyle (55.60) and the 1000-yard freestyle with a season best time of 10:34.14. Gomberg place first and earned season best times in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.47) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.87).
"I was very impressed with how Molly performed and set those times this early in the season," Paska said. "She has had a successful fall season and I am looking forward to seeing how she competes in the December and February."
Sophomore Arica Woolbright earned a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season best time of 2:31.68. Woolbright also earned a season best time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.24. Junior Jillian Olson won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.31.
Diving coach Phil Hoffmann was happy with how the divers competed in Saturday's meet.
"The divers competed really well on the road again this week," Hoffmann said. "I am looking forward to seeing how they compete in the rest of the season."
Junior Brittany Tazzioli placed third in the 1-meter with a score of 225.38 and second in the 3-meter with a score of 231.98. Senior Liza Perrino placed second in the 1-meter 230.85.
The Redbirds have two weeks off until they host Illinois at home November 12 at 6 p.m.
