Final Stats
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - After having a difficult first day at the Oak Point Golf Course, the Illinois State women's golf team stepped up in the third round to finish the Palmetto Intercollegiate tied for 12th place, stroking a 65-over-par 929 (307-312-310). The Redbirds shared the 12th-place position with Richmond (311-307-311) and Miami (302-309-318).
Freshman Brianna Cooper held onto her 24th place after carding a five-over-par 77 third round and finished the tournament with a nine-over-par 225. Sophomore Katie Jean was able to move up in the third round, ending the tournament tied for 43rd place after a 15-over-par 231 (75-79-77).
Junior Hannah Bachman improved her score in the third round, shooting a five-over-par 77 and moving from 69th place into a tie for 57th place. Senior Terra Miller had a difficult third round and fell to 65th place, totaling a 25-over-par 241 (78-79-84). Freshman Jordyn Wyzgowski rounded out the field of Redbirds, finishing with a 26-over-par 242 (82-81-79), and tied for 68th.
"Im proud of the way the girls hung on and moved up a couple of spots this week in the final round, but we have so much work to do this off season," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We are throwing away too many shots. We have to find a way to hold it together for three rounds if we want to compete this spring."
Charleston's Leigh Whittaker pulled out all of the stops in the final-day of competition, firing an 11-under-par 205 (67-67-71), finishing nine strokes ahead of the second-place finisher Courtney Boe of Carolina Coast.
As the women's golf team moves into the off season, the `Birds will have indoor training until they compete against Illinois in Venice, Fla., for the Illinois Challenge.
