KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team struggled in doubles Friday in day one of the Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The duo of seniors Matej Zlatkovic and Filip Miljevic were defeated in the first round of doubles play by Cleveland State's Yannick Goossens and Matt Kuelker, before coming back to win two in a row in the back-draw against UIC's Rahul Kamath and Gautham Oroskar and Cleveland State's Robert Fox and John Haley.

Senior Timon Reichelt teamed with freshman Mya Smith-Dennis, and the duo fell short in their first three matches to Western Michigan's Brad Noel and Ross VanderPloeg, Cleveland State's Matt Ford and Chris Klepatz, and Western Michigan's Kazuda Komada and Zeyad Montasser, before capping the day with a victory over DePaul's George Chanturia and Ben Hartman.

Head coach Cris James was not pleased with his team's effort Friday.

"I don't really know why, but we just looked uninspired," James said. "It's frustrating when we're at a tournament with four teams that we will be facing in the spring and don't play with any passion. We really have to go out and compete Saturday."

Saturday marks the start of singles play. Sophomore Alexander Pelaez will be competing in Flight A singles, Zlatkovic in Flight B singles, Miljevic and junior Skip Span in Flight C singles, and Smith-Dennis in Flight D singles. Matches will take place at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.
