COLUMBIA, Mo. -
Illinois State women's golf had a rough start in day one of the Johnie Imes Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne, as the Redbirds finished the second round in 13th place after shooting a 46-over-par 622 (320-302).
"We really shot ourselves in the foot after the morning round," head coach Darby Sligh said. "It's extremely hard to compete in a field this strong while firing a 320 in the morning round. With that being said, I'm proud of the way we fought back and made adjustments. The underclassmen stepped up for us in the afternoon, which was much needed."
After a difficult first round, freshman Brianna Cooper fought back in the second round firing one-under-par and carding a nine-over-par 153 (82-71) to tie for 38th place. Junior Hannah Bachman (78-79) and freshman Jordyn Wyzgowski (81-76) are tied for 55th place after both shot a 13-over-par 157 on the day. Sophomore Katie Jean holds 69th place after shooting a 16-over-par 160 (84-76), and is just one stroke ahead of senior Terra Miller in 70th with a 17-over-par 161 (79-82).
Princeton's Kelly Shon holds first place going into day three with a four-under-par 140 (70-70). Leading the field of 15 teams is Oklahoma State with a three-over-par 579 (293-286), as the Cowboy's Courtney McKim (73-68) is tied with Colorado's Jessica Wallace (72-69) for second place after both carded a three-under-par 141.
"Tomorrow I am looking for a strong effort from the entire team," Sligh said. "We are excited to get back on the course and finish strong."
The shotgun start for the third round begins at 8:00 a.m., tomorrow. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
