Redbirds Drop Road Match at Southern Illinois, 3-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Illinois State (12-8, 2-5 MVC) dropped its second Missouri Valley Conference match of the weekend, falling to Southern Illinois (12-5, 3-4 MVC) in four sets. Junior Tabitha Visk and freshman Shannon McGlaughlin combined for 30 kills for the Redbirds.

McGlaughlin led the Redbirds for the second-consecutive match with 17 kills and Visk added 13. Both players hit above .250 for the match. Senior Mallory Leggett had 11 kills and junior Kristi Stauter had 51 set-assists.

Southern Illinois held onto a slim lead through the first 23 points of the opening set, until a Leggett kill and a Culbertson block gave ISU its first lead, 13-12. Five ties followed and then SIU took a two-point edge, 19-17. The Redbirds tied the score three more times before SIU reached set-point, 24-22, but McGlaughlin kept the `Birds in it with back-to-back kills. SIU had two more set-points wasted, but was able to finish it off the third time with a block and win the set, 28-26. The first set had 16 ties and 106 combined attacks from the two teams.

A 4-0 run, capped by kills from McGlaughlin and Hranka, put ISU ahead, 9-6, in the second set. After SIU pulled within a point, the Redbirds went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead by seven, 18-11. A McGlaughlin kill brought ISU to 20 points first, but SIU went on a 9-2 run to win the set, 25-22. The Salukis closed out the set with eight kills, led by Jennifer Berwanger, who had five of her nine kills in the set. Both teams had 14 kills, seven errors, 47 attempts and a .149 hitting percentage in the second set.

An ace from Leggett erased a three-point SIU lead early in the third set. Three-straight kills later on gave the Salukis another three-point edge, 16-13. The `Birds chipped away and a McGlaughlin kill tied the set late at 23. The Salukis wasted two match points and a block by Visk and McGlaughlin gave ISU set point, 26-25. SIU sent a shot wide out the side and Illinois State held on for the set win, 27-25. ISU led only twice in the set.

Southern Illinois scored the first four points of the fourth set and used three-consecutive blocks to take an 8-3 lead. The Redbird committed three errors and SIU got another block as the deficit grew to eight points, 12-4. Three-straight kills by Berwanger stretched the SIU lead to double-digits, 17-7, and three more kills gave the Salukis their biggest lead of the match, 20-8. A Visk killed pulled ISU back within nine, but the Salukis ended the set with a pair of kills, 25-15.

Illinois State returns home to host No. 14 Northern Iowa Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
