The Stephanie Glance era in Illinois State women's basketball history begins Tuesday when Illinois State hosts Illinois-Springfield in an exhibition game at 7:05 p.m. in Redbird Arena. The game against the Prairie Stars is the only public exhibition game the Redbirds will play before the 2010-11 regular season.
Illinois State returns nine letterwinners from the 2009-10 team that won a third-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship, tied the school record with 28 wins and advanced to the WNIT semifinals for the second-straight season. The Redbirds lost their top-three leading scorers from that team, but return a solid core of contributors who will step into new roles.
Junior Katie Broadway is the team's top returning scorer, averaging 7.7 points per game last season. She led the Redbirds with 56 three-pointers and a 42.1 three-point field goal percentage. Senior Amanda Clifton is in her second season as the ISU starting point guard and had 117 assists last year. Redshirt senior Kenyatta Shelton returns to the court after missing the 2009-10 season with a knee injury. She has nearly 500 points and rebounds in her three previous years. Seniors Emily Hanley, Shala Jackson and Hannah Spanich all bring experience and depth to the Redbird roster.
Illinois State was picked to finish fourth in the 2010-11 MVC Preseason Poll, announced at the conference's annual media day Oct. 26. The Redbirds received 258 points and two first-place votes in the poll voted on by the league's coaches, SID's and media. ISU has been picked in the top-five in 19 of the 28 preseason polls in conference history. ISU was picked fourth just once before, in 1996-97, and went on to finish tied for second in the conference regular-season standings.
Illinois-Springfield is an NCAA Division II institution and competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Prairie Stars were 3-24 last season, with wins over Robert Morris-Springfield, Oakland City and Lindenwood. UIS was picked to finish fifth in the GLVC North Division in the preseason coaches' poll. Paulina Pogorzelski led the Prairie Stars in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) last season. UIS has two Bloomington-Normal natives on its roster in freshmen Alyssa Palmer (University HS) and Amanda Hainlen (Bloomington HS).
