Final Gamebook
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's basketball team opened its game at Arkansas-Little Rock with a 9-0 deficit and was never able to fully recover in a 63-54 nonconference contest at the Jack Stephens Center Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the first of the season for the Redbirds (2-1), while the Trojans improved to 3-1 on the year.
The Redbirds missed their first seven field goal attempts and UALR jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Finally, at the 14:14 mark in the first half, Blake Mishler sank ISU's first field goal of the game. The Redbirds trailed throughout the first half, but with a 7-0 run and another 5-0 run to end the first half, Illinois State was only down, 25-23, at halftime.
ISU's final 5-0 run of the first half was all Tony Lewis, including a put-back basket and free throw with 0.7 seconds left in the opening frame. UALR led by as many as 13 points in the first half.
The Redbirds kept the game close in the second half, despite never leading in the game, until the 11:13 mark when UALR's Daylon Guy caught fire. Guy sank 11-straight Trojan points, making all four shot attempts during the run, and UALR jumped out to a 47-39 advantage.
Trey Blue led the Redbirds with 14 points, including 12 in the second half, while Austin Hill added 13 points.
Illinois State will be back in action Friday, at 6:05 p.m., on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena, when the Redbirds host South Dakota in the first day of the 2010 Global Sports Roundball Classic.
