BROOKINGS, S.D. -
Illinois State had a game-tying three-pointer fall short at the buzzer and lost at South Dakota State, 73-70, Wednesday night. The Redbirds nearly erased a seven-point deficit in the final minute, but a near 10-minute scoring drought proved too much for them to overcome.
Emily Hanley recorded her first-career double-double with career-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Redbirds. She scored 17 points in the second half, including nine of ISU's final 16 points. Katie Broadway scored 16 points and tied her career-high with seven rebounds. Shala Jackson added 14 points.
"We had a few too many defensive breakdowns in the second half," said ISU head coach Stephanie Glance. "South Dakota State gained a physical advantage to get some offensive rebounds and force some turnovers. We didn't respond the way we needed to until the end. South Dakota State is a well disciplined, well coached team and this is a difficult place to play. They deserve all the credit in the world for coming back the way they did."
After seven-straight points by South Dakota State, Broadway converted a three-point play to tie the score and then found Alexis Jenkins on the fastbreak to give ISU a 9-7 lead. Another three-point play by Hannah Spanich and two Broadway free throws put ISU ahead by five, but the Jackrabbits answered right back with a 9-2 run for a 20-18 edge with 7:31 remaining.
With SDSU leading by four, Illinois State went on an 8-0 run with four-straight jump shots to take a four-point lead of its own, 32-28. South Dakota State scored twice in the final minutes to pull within a point at the half, 34-33. Broadway scored 14 points in the half, including six of ISU's final 10. ISU started the game just 7-of-23 from the field, but made five of its last seven shots.
Hanley scored three times in the first three minutes of the second half to fuel an 8-2 run that gave ISU its biggest lead of the game, 42-35. A three-point play from Kenyatta Shelton made the score 54-48 Redbirds with 11:30 remaining.
After that, the Redbirds hit a cold spell, going more than eight minutes without a field goal. Both teams traded field goals, but 11 unanswered points in a four-minute span gave South Dakota State the lead, 65-58. The Jackrabbits outscored the Redbirds 25-11 to turn a seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead with 3:29 left in the game.
Hanley snapped the Redbird drought at nine minutes, 30 seconds with a three-pointer at the two-minute mark. Trailing by five with less than a minute left, Hanley came up big again with a layup to make it a one possession game, 70-67, with 34 seconds on the clock. After an SDSU free throw, Jackson nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with eight seconds left. Two more free throws gave ISU a shot at the tie on the final possession, but Hanley had to force up a three-pointer with a defender on her that fell well short.
