Play-by-Play Highlights
NORMAL, Ill. -
Sophomore forward Jackie Carmichael scored ten of his career-high 22 points in the second half to help Illinois State (3-1) power past South Dakota State (1-3) by a score of 81-63 in the first game of the Global Sports Roundball Classic Friday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
Carmichael was 9-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 22 points, to go along with five rebounds and two blocked shots. Carmichael was one of four Redbirds in double figures and was joined by Austin Hill with 16 points and a career-high six assists, Blake Mishler with 12 points and Tony Lewis with 10 points.
The Coyotes jumped out to 4-0 lead and later extended that lead to 9-4 at the 16:27 mark after a three-pointer by Jordan Boots. After a free throw by Carmichael and a dunk by Justin Clark, the Redbirds cut the lead to two points before the Coyotes scored six-straight points to widen their lead to 15-7 with 13:54 left in the half.
Illinois State answered with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, sparked by seven points from Hill, to take its first lead of the game at 17-15. The Redbirds would extend that run to 19-2 on another layup by Hill at the 8:13 mark to make the score 26-17. South Dakota cut the lead to six points at 26-20 after Boots' second trey of the half, before six-straight points from the Redbirds widened the lead back to double digits at 32-20 with just over six minutes remaining.
That lead would eventually grow to 14 points at the 4:20 mark after Carmichael converted a traditional three-point play. South Dakota finished the half on a 13-6 run, capped off by seven-straight points from Charlie Westbrook in the last minute of play, to cut the ISU lead to seven points at 41-34 at halftime.
The two teams traded baskets out of the break, with Illinois State maintaining a 47-38 advantage at the 16:20 mark, before the Redbirds put together a 9-0 run capped off by a Mishler layup to take a 56-38 lead just three minutes later. The Coyotes later cut into that lead at 58-45 after a layup by Steve Tecker, but the Redbirds answered with a 13-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to take a 71-47 lead with 7:42 left on the clock.
Carmichael continued his hot shooting from the field and his dunk with 6:08 left in the game gave the Redbirds a 75-49 lead, their largest of the game. The Coyotes cut into the lead at 80-63, but a free throw from John Ekey with 36 seconds remaining put a cap on an 81-63 win for the Redbirds.
ISU returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. on Doug Collins Court for game three of the 2010 Global Sports Roundball Classic against Louisiana-Monroe.
